Airport Regulations – India

The carriage of cabin baggage is restricted to one piece weighing not more than 8 kg. Such baggage should be located under the passenger seat or in the closed overhead rack. The sum of the 3 dimensions of all such carry on items can not exceed 45 inches or 115 cm. Besides, there are the following rules for checking baggage: passengers of first class can carry 2 pieces of baggage; each weighing not more than 32kg and not exceeding 62 linear inches, passengers of economy class can carry 2 pieces of baggage, each weighing not more than 23kg and not exceeding 62 linear inches.

The excess baggage charge levied on baggage is determined by a number of factors: the country of arrival, country of departure, the airline of travel. Every combination of these factors has a standard excess baggage fee.

If a bag exceeds the dimensions limit for free carriage but is not more than 203 cm (80 inches) and is within the weight limit, the standard fee is still applied. Nevertheless, any baggage exceeding both the dimensions and number, but where the sum of the three dimensions is not more 203 cm (80 inches) and is within the weight limit, twice the standard fee is charged.

As the Assistant Commissioner of Customs or Deputy Commissioner of Customs may allow, the unaccompanied baggage may land in India up to 2 months before the arrival of the passenger or within such period, but not more than one year. Of course, the reasons for this must be recorded, why the passenger was prevented from arriving in India within such period due to circumstances beyond his control such as sudden natural calamities or disturbed conditions or disruption of the transport or illness of the passenger or a member of his family or any other reasons, which changed the passenger’s travel schedule. Travelers who do not have any unaccompanied baggage, all of which need to be declared, can simply walk through the Green Channel.
